In 1998, CEP began a “beneficial reuse” process to treat hazardous wastes in-house rather than ship the waste out of the facility for treatment. This process entails using the acid and caustic byproducts of production in the wastewater treatment process, rather than shipping this waste out as a hazardous waste to landfill. During the first year of the operation, CEP reduced its hazardous waste shipments by 120 drums of waste. This amounted to savings of over $14,000 in waste treatment costs over the course of the year.
